Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Dear Fenton Families,

Thank you to all of our parents and guardians who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences and made a connection with our incredible teachers. Please stay in touch. Our goal is for school and home to collaborate as one, and work together seamlessly to meet the needs of our students.

Below are numerous other topics I’m eager to share with you.

Senior Citizens Enjoy the Fall Play

On Saturday we hosted a group of senior citizens for this year’s matinee show of our Fall Play, titled “Leaving Iowa.” The show involved a man who returns to his home in Iowa and goes on an adventure to find the perfect place to spread his father’s ashes, visiting locations from his childhood family vacations. It had a perfect mix of comedy with several heartfelt moments.

Our senior guests found themselves laughing uncontrollably on several occasions, including when the main character has a flashback to a visit at his grandparents’ home. Our students are so talented!

Fenton High School appreciates the contributions and sacrifices all our residents have made over the decades to make this school and community an amazing place to live. Senior Citizens are always welcome to attend our games and events free of charge.

Rotary Coat Drive

Earlier Saturday morning the Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary Club was hard at work distributing 200 coats to children who attend Bensenville School District 2, Wood Dale School District 7 and Fenton High School.

As we all know, kids grow up so fast! Sometimes too fast, especially when money is tight. We’re thankful to all the generous donors and to the vendors who provided coats at reduced prices. There’s still time to donate! The Rotary is continuing to collect money for late requests and as a head start for next year’s coat drive. Click here to make a tax deductible donation.

And, of course, thank you to all the students and adults who volunteered with the Rotary and gave up their weekend to distribute these coats.

Asbestos Abatement

In order to install hardwood floors in the front gym and to replace floor tiles in Room 201, asbestos needs removed from the subfloors in both areas.

A certified asbestos abatement company, Celtic Environmental, is under contract to perform the work. Here are some important points regarding the process:

  • These areas are closed and will remain closed until further notice.
  • We will follow all guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
  • All asbestos removal will occur after school or during weekend hours when our school is empty or at minimal occupancy.
  • Two layers of thick temporary barrier bubbles for the walls and ceilings will be installed to seal and isolate the work area from the nearby rooms and hallways, according to guidelines from the EPA and IDPH.
  • Industrial strength HEPA air filters will replace all air inside the area every 15 minutes.
  • There will be a separate environmental consultant on site to manage and take air quality sampling on a daily basis. This third party monitoring is a requirement of the EPA and IDPH.

The federal government requires asbestos abatement public notices prior to the beginning of the work which is scheduled to start October 19. Please click on the link below to review Fenton’s public notice:

Free Flu Vaccinations

With cold and flu season upon us, the Fenton Health Office is encouraging students and their families to get a seasonal flu shot as a precaution to prevent or minimize the effects of an infection.

Our community partners at DuPage Health Coalition have a free Jewel-Osco flu shot voucher for families facing economic hardships. Simply click on the link below, print the voucher, and give it to the pharmacist at any Jewel-Osco in DuPage County before February 28th. The pharmacist might ask for proof that you live in DuPage County, so be prepared to show your driver’s license or any bill with your address.

Banda NIU Visits Fenton

College Students from Northern Illinois University’s Banda NIU visited Fenton on September 27 to share their skills at performing Latino music. Banda NIU stayed for multiple class periods so a variety of classes could attend based on availability. The mini concert was part of Fenton’s Latino Heritage Month activities.

This incredible opportunity to share and learn about other cultures was made possible thanks to a $3,000 grant from the DuPage Foundation’s JCS Arts, Health, and Education fund.
