Update from Superintendent Ongtengco
Dear Fenton Families,
I have several important updates for you this week, but first I would like to celebrate one of our incredible leaders, School Board Secretary Leo Figueroa.
Established Board Leader
Mr. Figueroa has been recognized by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) for his participation in a number of professional development and leadership activities over the course of his service as a sitting school board member.
IASB praised Mr. Figueroa for being a board member who continually shows dedication and desire to learn leadership skills and gains knowledge of state and national educational issues. Mr. Figueroa is constantly showing his commitment in serving the Fenton Community, our students, our parents, our staff, and our community. He devotes considerable time to North DuPage Special Education Cooperative (NDSEC), DEI, Facility initiatives, Kermes fundraisers, Fenton Foundation, Padres Unidos, Board Training, and all of the IASB events. It goes without saying that Leo is a recognized leader in our community and his efforts produce greater access to education and more opportunities for our children to enjoy their learning experiences.
Because of Mr. Figueroa’s ongoing commitment, he has earned the designation of IASB Established Board Leader. It’s a prestigious honor bestowed upon a limited number of long serving school board members. Our Fenton District 100 School Board congratulated Mr. Figueroa at Wednesday’s board meeting.
Please join us in congratulating Mr. Figueroa!
Day of Service
Community Service is a unique and cherished graduation requirement at Fenton High School. Volunteering one’s time and energy to improve their community creates common ground, builds empathy, and unites us as neighbors.
In late September about 60 students participated in Fenton's Day of Service by volunteering with projects at Fischer Farm, making blankets at the Bensenville Public Library as part of the Linus Project, and several stayed at Fenton cleaning Homecoming decorations or writing thank you letters to military veterans and those who donate to the Bensenville Wood Dale Food Pantry.
Thank you to our neighbors and community partners for allowing our students to learn and grow from your passions. Thank you to all our students from Bison Nation who stepped out of their comfort zones to help a worthy cause.
Asbestos Update
We have finished removing asbestos from Classroom 201 and have begun the restoration process. We are still part way through the asbestos abatement in the Front Gym, but we’re making good progress.
As a reminder, A certified asbestos abatement company, Celtic Environmental, is under contract to perform the work and a third party is present to monitor air quality, as mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Room 201 and the Front Gym have been sealed off with two layers of thick temporary barrier bubbles along the walls and ceilings. All air inside the rooms is replaced by industrial strength air HEPA filters every 15 minutes. We have been assured that all work has occurred normally, without any leaks or abnormal air quality.
Sidewalk And Storm Sewer
As you have likely noticed, one of our doorways on the front side of the building was closed for a few days. Door 2 is located near the ARC, in between the science and world language hallways. While installing a new storm sewer drain near the entry we also decided to address the degraded slope and poor quality of the sidewalk. We completely removed the sidewalk, changed the elevation of that pathway, added a French drain system near the door, and then poured fresh concrete. Water should not pool or flood in that area anymore. The new sidewalk will be easier to walk on and will more effectively redirect water toward a new stormwater sewer.
We also have discovered that an underground storm sewer along the bus lane has partially collapsed. A construction crew will dig out the old drain and replace it with a new, larger, and sturdier drain that will protect our campus for many years. We anticipate starting that work in the next few weeks.
Both of these projects are critical to keeping our building open and safe. We appreciate your patience as we address these important needs.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org

Exploring Latino Art
Leading up to Día de Los Muertos, Spanish 3 classes visited the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago on Thursday, October 26 to check out the Ofrenda exhibit in the National Museum of Mexican Art, then headed to Los Comales for lunch, and wrapped up the trip by touring murals in the neighborhood with Churros and hot chocolate from Xurro Cafe. Learning is fun!!!
Fall Choir Concert Makes the World Go Round
Thank you to all the classmates, family, and community members who attended the Fall Choir Concert on Sunday, October 22. This was the first opportunity for students to perform on stage this year. Mark your calendars for the joint band and choir holiday concert, which is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 17 in the Auditorium. All are invited; the event is free and open to the public.
Volleyball Player Reaches Milestone
Congratulations to senior Lily Du for surpassing 500 career digs while playing for Fenton’s volleyball team. She eclipsed the rarely achieved milestone with 7 digs during Fenton’s Senior Night match against East Aurora on Tuesday, October 17.
“Lily has grown into this player that has become the X Factor in our matches,” Coach Adam Bloniarz said. “She is a Senior Captain and leads this team with her phenomenal passing and rocket serves. You will see her diving and rolling for every ball, creating these Wow moments in matches that makes your jaw drop! She takes pressure well and has flourished this season. She truly will be missed!”
Lily plans to attend College of DuPage and study interior design. She encouraged younger teammates and future Bison to work hard, but always have fun.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself and remember to have fun on the court and not take it too seriously,” Lily said during Senior Night festivities. “Work hard for your spot, whether you start or are on the bench. And be nice to everyone on your team!”
Paying Tribute to the Girls Volleyball Class of 2024
Students from all levels of the girls volleyball program rallied on court to serenade the seniors during their final match at Fenton. The Bison were set to square off against East Aurora during the October 17 Senior Night. Parents and other family members were invited to join the students on court for a round of applause, giving thanks for their four years of dedication to representing Fenton High School.
