Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Dear Fenton Families,

Thanksgiving came and went, but we can still be thankful each and every day. Our latest Food For Families distribution was on November 28th and I was absolutely mesmerized by the turnout from our community as well as the grace our staff and student volunteers demonstrated meeting that need.

Mr. Kambic, Mr. Ehrhardt and their 25 student volunteers built an impressive assembly line to pack food from Northern Illinois Food Bank in ways that allowed everyone in line to get assistance.

In total, 213 families covering about 904 individuals received enough food for a couple of days worth of meals. That little bit can be critical to families navigating work shortages or suffering large medical expenses. No one should go hungry!

These are the experiences we want for our students when they accumulate their community service hours. These are meaningful, selfless acts that make a huge difference in the lives of our neighbors and unite us as a family.

We have two more of these food distributions and Mr. Kambic is hard at work trying to fundraise the money needed to purchase mobile pantries from Northern Illinois Food Bank. If you or someone you know is looking to make a tax deductible donation to a worthy cause, please call our school and ask for Mr. Kambic.

Huge Bison Shout Out to our student volunteers for making this happen. A bulk of them were from the National Honor Society, but other small groups were from the Highlights Yearbook Club, the Bison Volleyball program, boys soccer team, and freshmen from Ms. Mullins’ social studies classes.

E-Learning Reminder

Another important fact is that our Fenton Bison distributed all that food during a bitter 19 degrees windy night.

With that being said, weather conditions will continue to be more harsh and unpredictable moving forward. I want to remind all our families about E-Learning, which is the short term use of Internet-based classes. E-Learning was approved for Fenton in 2019 as a tool for continuing the learning process when coming into the building is not possible due to an emergency. If we are unable to open Fenton for one reason or another, the following will be in effect:

  1. Students will follow the regular bell schedule for the day while learning from home.
    Fenton 2021-2022 E-Learning Bell Schedule

  2. Students are expected to begin virtual instruction at the time of the bell for each period. Students should log-in to the Google Classroom for the appropriate class period and join their teacher and classmates in virtual instruction by using the Google Meet link located in the upper left hand corner of the page. Students are expected to participate in all virtual learning activities and complete any work as assigned. Teachers will be available to help and assist students virtually throughout the entire class period.

  3. Attendance will be taken for each class.

  4. Bison Time: Students are expected to check in to Bison Time if an E-Learning day occurs Tuesday - Friday. Teachers will take attendance for Bison Time. Bison Time will be an opportunity to make school-wide announcements to the students. If no announcements are necessary, students will be dismissed from Bison Time after check-in.

Juniors Learn about Careers, Internships, TCD

All juniors gathered in the auditorium during Bison Time on Thursday, November 30th to learn about the rigorous course opportunities available to them in their final year at Fenton as well as available internships that could be the foundation of their future career.

Four current seniors shared wisdom from their experiences. Elmer Escobedo is an intern in manufacturing and engineering, Amber Hayde talked about getting certifications at Technology Center of DuPage (TCD), Dominika Wandachowicz had an internship in web development and is currently an intern for a realtor, and Abby Hernandez is an intern at a law firm.

Michelle Papanicolaou, Fenton’s Director of Postsecondary Pathways and Division Leader for Career and Technical Education, encouraged the junior class to utilize all the free opportunities Fenton has to offer and experiment with potential careers, whether it’s via an internship, AP class, enrollment at TCD, or simply by attending a career talk during lunch.

Course selection concludes on Tuesday, December 19th. Students and parents are encouraged to review options with their counselor.

Teaching Interns Get More Time Running Their Rooms

Students in Introduction to Education with Mrs. Seredy Williams are completing internships and they experienced their first FULL DAY as a teacher. On Wednesday, November 29, host teachers at Johnson School, Tioga School, and Westview School took a back seat and let the Fenton students lead the classes from start to finish.
Fenton students typically visit these schools 2 hours per day, three days per week (60 total hours per semester), gaining valuable experience working with children and speaking in front of classes. These valuable experiences help advance Mrs. Williams' curriculum and the lessons she can develop for the Fenton students.
Intro to Education is part of Fenton's growing Career Pathway programming aimed at helping students explore and choose careers to pursue after high school. This course is part of the Education and Training college and career pathway, which offers an endorsement on high school diplomas if all courses are completed.
