Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen
Dear Fenton School Community,
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and we have a short week ahead of us. There’s no school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We hope all our students, teachers, and staff are able to spend meaningful time with your loved ones and get some rest.
This is also a good time to reflect on all the positives we enjoy in our lives.
Our hard working and energetic students are first to mind. Seeing them excited to learn and try new things is what makes being part of a school so meaningful.
At Wednesday’s School Board meeting we recognized Josslyn Wade for finishing in 16th Place at the IHSA Girls Cross Country State Finals. It’s humbling to see a student work so hard to succeed while wearing the name and colors of our school. Her success elevated her classmates, teachers, and our school into the spotlight. And she was so modest and graceful.
Congratulations to Josslyn, Coach Frank Kekstadt, Coach Gissel Garcia, Coach Alexa Flores, and the entire girls cross country program. Thank you all for everything you do for Fenton High School.
With that being said, the week of November 18-22 was American Education Week and November 22 was Substitute Educators Day. Thank you to all of our teachers, substitutes, support staff, bus drivers, maintenance, grounds, and school board members for making this school district such a great asset to our community.
Bus drivers are among the unsung heroes of all schools. They’re the first person students see on their way to school and the last school employee students see before they get home. Our bus drivers are here early in the morning on the weekends supporting our students while on their way to competitions, they cheer on the Mighty Bison during away games, and celebrate with our students on the way home.
We are seeking a few more drivers to join our phenomenal team. Community members can get a $500 referral prize if they recommend a bus driver who gets hired. Staff members can get a $600 bonus if they recommend a bus driver who gets hired.
Interested candidates can apply on our HR Portal by clicking here.
Finally, with the Thanksgiving Holiday getting closer, we’re thankful and proud of our community.
Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone facilitated a donation of 200 turkeys from Grand Subaru to the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry, for which our very own Rick Kambic presides as Board President. Mr. Kambic, President DeSimone, and a team from Grand Subaru were on hand Saturday morning to assist other Food Pantry volunteers in distributing the turkeys and various food items to make sure even our most vulnerable neighbors can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones.
Then at Sunday’s Holiday Magic Tree Lighting, President DeSimone presented a $16,762.10 check to the Food Pantry after weeks of fundraising for the cause.
This is truly a great place to live, learn, and work.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Sam Bentsen, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent

Fenton Choir Supports Blackhawk Choir
Thank you to the incredible students in the Fenton Choir for attending the Blackhawk Middle School choir concert on Wednesday, November 20 to support our Future Bison. The Fenton choir had the honor of a guest appearance on stage, as the joint high school and middle school ensemble performed two songs together toward the end of the concert.
We can't wait for our Future Bison to get their blue robes and join our ensembles on stage in the Lewis-Huffman Auditorium here at Fenton.
Congresswoman Meets with Fenton Students
English Learners enjoyed getting to meet District 3 Congresswoman Delia Ramirez via Zoom on Friday, November 22 during their social studies classes. Mrs. Laura Avila-Peterson worked with several groups of students on preparing questions for the Congresswoman based on topics being covered in their Government and Civics unit.
The 30-minute meet-and-greet in Room 302 covered topics related to being a first generation American, the benefits of being bilingual, how to get involved in your local community and local government, as well as what it’s like to be a member of Congress.
Each student who asked a prepared question on camera received a gift for being so courageous.
Thank you Congresswoman Ramirez for sharing your time and wisdom with our students!
Exploring Potential Career Paths
Thank you to the more than 50 local businesses and organizations that joined our Career Fair on Wednesday, November 20, giving our students a chance to meet industry professionals and ask their own questions.
A special thank you to STR Partners and the Bensenville Youth Coalition for donating funds that went toward raffle prizes for students who toured the fair and engaged with the visiting professionals.
Our Career Pathways programing intends for all students to have a plan(s) for life after high school. What better way to consider your career options than to speak with real people who do the jobs! Bringing all of our partners to the cafeteria at once provides every single student an opportunity to explore areas of interest and then ask their counselors about related courses.
Fenton will continue to have other career-based activities throughout the year, including a jobs fair in the second semester. Please let us know if you or anyone you know is interested in attending a jobs fair, being a guest speaker, or welcoming a class to tour your facility. We also need mentors for our new INCubator program, which teaches students how to open their own businesses and be successful. Contact Michelle Papanicolaou, Fenton’s Director of Post Secondary Pathways, by sending an email to papanicolaou@fenton100.org.
Girls Basketball Pick and Roll through First Week of the Season
Fenton’s girls basketball team won their November 18 season opener against Bremen 39-36 in overtime after being down by three points with 3.8 seconds remaining in the game. The Bison were able to push down the court and sink a buzzer beater to force OT.
The dominance has continued, leading to a 4-1 record and a third place finish in the Zion-Benton Invitational.
Their next matchup is December 3 at Elmwood Park. Their next home game is Thursday, December 5 against Riverside Brookfield.
