Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

May 5th to May 8th was Staff Appreciation Week, and we’ve shared tokens of appreciation every single day. I want to express my gratitude to all our teachers, counselors, social workers, coaches, club sponsors, teacher assistants, office support staff, bus drivers, maintenance staff, grounds staff, and even our wonderful cafeteria staff.

On behalf of the Board of Education and the District Administration, we hope everyone enjoyed their complimentary lunches, ice cream, plants, and more. We had several moments of bonding each day, which helps us grow together as a family with the same shared goal of supporting our students.

I want to express my gratitude for the hard work, patience, and dedication Fenton’s staff contributes every day of every year. Each staff member has an impact on the lives of our students in countless ways on a daily basis. Your work matters. Your impact is felt. And your efforts do not go unnoticed.

Two outstanding teachers in particular were recognized at our April Board of Education Meeting, a small head start on Staff Appreciation Week.

We recognized Dr. Kelly Torres and Mr. Luis Garcia for being named as finalists for the 2025 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Fenton teachers are honored by the School Board for being named as Golden Apple finalists

The Golden Apple Foundation recognizes exemplary educators, supports young teachers through mentorship programs, and works to recruit future teachers through a scholars program that’s open to high school and college students.

Only 30 finalists were selected from 470 nominations throughout Illinois. Of the 30 finalists, just 10 are from the suburbs.

Dr. Torres is a social studies teacher who joined Fenton in 2013 and earned her Doctorate in Education this year.

She was involved in revising the Criminal Justice course to be fully Project-Based Learning, which has included visits from the FBI, Congressional officials, and Larry Lawton – a notorious jewelry thief that is now the only convict to be an honorary police officer and to testify before Congress.

Additionally, Dr. Torres helped revise our Bison Orange course that supports struggling students.

Dr. Kelly Torres and Mr. Luis Garcia

Mr. Garcia is a business education teacher who joined Fenton in 2021. He is a vital member of our INCubator team.

INCubator is a hands-on, real-world entrepreneurship experience that allows students to conceptualize and fully develop their own products or services all while being guided by real-world entrepreneurs and business professionals.

This is our first year with INCubator and Mr. Garcia has gone above and beyond to develop the program, recruit mentors, collect dress clothes for students to wear, and secure donations for students to win during the various Shark Tank events throughout the year.

Throughout all of his classes, Mr. Garcia inspires his students with real life experiences and he adapts the lessons to his audience so they can absorb the information in their best way possible.

Earlier this year Mr. Garcia was recognized by DAOES and the College of DuPage as Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year.

These are but two of the many incredible educators and staff who are working with and supporting our students every day. Thank you to all. I’m honored to partner with this staff and our Bensenville/Wood Dale community.

YWCA Provides Part 3 of Empowered Parent Series

We understand that keeping your children safe is your top priority, and Fenton High School is committed to supporting the safety and well-being of our students. We are continuing our partnership with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago to offer Part 3 of the Empowered Parents Series

Empowered Parents is a three-part educational series designed to equip parents with essential knowledge and practical tools to recognize warning signs, protect their children, and respond appropriately to concerns.

The series was delivered over three months and covers the following critical topics:
  • Recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse
  • Protecting children from grooming and sexual exploitation
  • Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault

This new resource, as well as other programming offered by Fenton, can be found on our new “Parent Resources” page on our website under the parents tab.

Our goal is to provide parents with valuable tools to support their children’s safety, growth, and well-being. By increasing awareness and preparedness, we can work together to prevent harm and ensure every child feels safe and protected.

We invite you to continue this important series with Part Three: Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault

Students get recognized in the Be REAL positive behavior recognition program

Caught Being REAL!

Several students were recently caught Being REAL! Fenton’s Be REAL initiative utilizes an acknowledgement system to reward students who demonstrate appropriate behavior and make good choices. The acronym stands for Be a Responsible, Engaged, Appropriate Learner.

Each student was nominated by their peers during school-wide SEL activities. This new nomination process was recently incorporated as a way for students to have a voice and be more involved in celebrating each other.

Recipients were recognized with a certificate and small prize.

Fenton thanks and celebrates internship mentors

Recognizing our Internship Mentors

Fenton’s internship program has grown from 18 students in the 2023-2024 school year to 48 students this year, and 78 students are signed up for next year. Each student travels to their internship multiple times per week to work alongside and learn from industry professionals in a wide variety of industries.

On April 30, the internship mentors traveled to Fenton for an Internship Mentors Appreciation Luncheon. Students built slideshows to display what they learned and to give thanks to their mentors, who also received custom wooden plaques. Fenton students gained more than 10,000 hours of experience this year!

If your workplace is willing to host a Fenton intern next year, please contact Internship Coordinator Lauren Lemm (lemm@fenton100.org).

Students visit the National Museum of Puerto Rican Art

Learning About Puerto Rican Culture

Students in Spanish 3 classes with Mrs. Amy Vazquez took a field trip on Thursday, May 1 to Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood where they walked “The 606,” which is officially the 2.7-mile Bloomingdale Trail and is the longest greenway project of a former elevated rail line in the Western Hemisphere (the second longest in the world).

Along the way, students learned all about Puerto Rican culture by taking a mural tour on the Paseo Boricua, visiting shops, restaurants, and visiting the National Puerto Rican Museum.
