Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen
Dear Fenton School Community,
On Thursday, May 22 our incredible Fenton High School Class of 2025 will cross the stage and enter a new chapter of their lives as Alumni. Next week is going to be packed with great seniors celebrations such as
-
Senior Awards Night – Monday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium
-
Senior Brunch – Tuesday, May 20th at 10 a.m. at White Pines Golf Course
-
Graduation Practice – Wednesday, May 21 at 8:30 a.m. in the Fieldhouse
-
Commencement Ceremony – Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse
As we gear up for those celebrations, I want to thank our many community partners who have contributed to our students being successful during the course of their four years at Fenton High School.
First and foremost, thank you to our parents and guardians. Your partnership is instrumental. Students achieve the most when school and home collaborate as one. For as much as next week will be a celebration for our students, it’s even more important to parents who had a vision for their family and worked tirelessly for 18 years to make it happen.
We’ve also had many, many outstanding guest speakers and class mentors who brought the real world to our students, providing practical examples of classroom lessons being used in “the real world.”
As you saw in last week’s newsletter, we gave thanks to dozens of internship mentors who welcomed our students into their place of business for hands-on learning that showed economic gain from hard work, collaboration, and creative thinking. Again, thank you to our partners in the business community.
Local community groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Tioga Post 2149 support our students through various donations. This year the VFW donated $650 to our Fenton Foundation to support students who want to be involved in a sport or club but may not be able to pay the full fee. They recognize the value of students having safe, productive, educational activities after the school day ends. They recognize that students feeling as though they belong to something creates drive and motivation.
Later in the year the VFW donated $500 toward our INCubator Pitch Night awards fund, which goes to students whose business pitches are selected by a panel of business professionals. Students putting their ideas on the open market is a prime example of the American free market system, and we can’t thank our donors enough for believing in us.
One of our INCubator panelists was Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone, who oversees a multimillion dollar budget. While in deliberations to pick winners at last week’s Pitch Night, President DeSimone chose to donate $600 of his own money to secure a winner he believed in. Our students seeing someone believe in them that much is a life lesson all in itself. Thank you, Mr. President.
Even as recently as this week, on Monday, Fenton partnered with the Bensenville Youth Coalition, the Bensenville Community Foundation, the Bensenville Community Public Library, Bensenville School District 2, and the Village of Bensenville to put on a bicycle safety workshop to celebrate National Bike Month.
At Monday’s event, five Fenton students were among 20 children in Bensenville to receive free bicycles as an incentive to enjoy the outdoors, live a healthy lifestyle, get to and from school, and have meaningful relationships with friends. Positive, healthy lifestyles make learning easier. That part of the event is a program known as Wheels4Wisdom. Thank you to all of our great community organizations for coming together on programs like this to support student growth, safety, health, and education.
We can’t wait to celebrate the Class of 2025 next week. Let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your partnership.
Sam Bentsen, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent
Sundaes for Seniors
Soon-to-be graduates were treated to Senior Sundaes during all lunch periods on Wednesday, their second to last lunch while in high school. The treat served as a final gesture of pride and gratitude for their four years of hard work.
Pre-Order Flowers for Thursday’s Graduation Ceremony
Fenton’s Commencement Ceremony is Thursday, May 22 with doors closing at 7 p.m. Families of students in the Class of 2025 can pre-order flowers or stuffed animals through a Fenton vendor, The Commencement Group. All online orders will be available for pickup on site the day of graduation. To retrieve your order, please stop by their booth located along the way to the Fieldhouse before the ceremony begins.
Multilingual Senior Celebration
English Language Learners gathered in the auditorium during Bison Time on Tuesday, May 13 to celebrate a year’s worth of accomplishments – including seniors who will graduate next week and non-English native speakers who earned the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy.
In order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, each qualifying student must demonstrate proficiency in English and another language on a state-approved language assessment. The Seal of Biliteracy is displayed on a student’s diploma and transcripts for future educational institutions and employers.
YWCA Provides Part 3 of Empowered Parent Series
We understand that keeping your children safe is your top priority, and Fenton High School is committed to supporting the safety and well-being of our students. We are continuing our partnership with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago to offer Part 3 of the Empowered Parents Series
Empowered Parents is a three-part educational series designed to equip parents with essential knowledge and practical tools to recognize warning signs, protect their children, and respond appropriately to concerns.
The series was delivered over three months and covers the following critical topics:
-
Recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse
-
Protecting children from grooming and sexual exploitation
-
Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault
This new resource, as well as other programming offered by Fenton, can be found on our new “Parent Resources” page on our website under the parents tab.
Our goal is to provide parents with valuable tools to support their children’s safety, growth, and well-being. By increasing awareness and preparedness, we can work together to prevent harm and ensure every child feels safe and protected.
We invite you to continue this important series with Part Three: Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault

Student Pitch Business Ideas and Win Money at Incubator Pitch Night
Congratulations to all the INCubator students who displayed their businesses and competed for checks on stage during the May 8 Inaugural INCubator Pitch Night. The evening closely resembled the hit TV show Shark Tank, with real money going toward real business ideas.
Students in the full year Entrepreneurship class (also known as INCubator) have the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product or service and incorporate it into a real-world business they own. Guided by real-world entrepreneurs and local industry-leading mentors, students experience the full range of business operations, including ideation, research, marketing, accounting, human resources, as well as the legal aspects of running a business.
The course culminates in Pitch Night, where student teams present their innovative ideas to a panel of professionals, with the chance to secure funding to bring their business plans to life.
All award money was fundraised, with several generous donations coming from local businesses and local organizations over the past few months. A surprise donation even occurred during the May 8 event, as Raul Diaz and Anthony Kandah presented a $750 check on behalf of Schaumburg Bank.
