Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Hola Fenton Families,

I’m filled with so much Fenton pride this week. A huge Bison Shout Out to our Basketball Olympians for winning 2nd place at state on Friday. Their State Bound send off Thursday morning was standing room only! They have definitely captured the hearts of Fenton High School as well as the Bensenville and Wood communities. This is proof that hard work and buying into your team goal can pay off big time. Congratulations!

I’m also very proud to partner with so many passionate and influential female trailblazers. Wednesday was International Women’s Day and we commemorated the holiday with a Young Women’s Leadership Summit that included a panel of local women, including Dr. Katie McCluskey, Superintendent of Bensenville School District 2, and Dr. Ivette Dubiel, an educator who assisted Fenton in our Equity Audit and the development of our Equity Action Plan. More than 100 girls from Blackhawk Middle School rode a bus to Fenton and joined another 150 of our students in the auditorium. They listened to the panel presentation, asked their own questions, and then did a women-themed Bingo scavenger hunt, and ended with small group activities designed to recognize and celebrate each others’ greatness. I’m so proud to know these leaders and so proud to have all these rising stars in our school and community. Anything is possible!

Finally, this upcoming week we will be hosting two career fairs and two college fairs during our lunch periods. These are important opportunities our students can use to chase their dreams and change the world. Our staff has done a remarkable job of getting a wide variety of organizations and educational institutions to attend and speak with our students.

Fenton College and Career Fairs Flier 2023

Here’s how it works. The career fairs and college fairs alternate. On Tuesday Students can meet employees from a variety of organizations and learn about the company’s mission, the employee’s daily work, and the credentials necessary to work there. Then on Wednesday, students can meet a variety of colleges and ask if they offer courses that could lead to the careers they learned about the day before. It repeats on Thursday and Friday.

College and Careers Fairs flier 2023

We encourage our Fenton Families to talk about your long term goals and then ask a lot of questions during the college fairs and career fairs. Seize this opportunity to build a plan or act on your current ambitions. And, of course, talk with your counselors about your goals and plans for the future. They will help!

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org

Parents Invited to Complete 5Essentials Survey

5Essentials of Education ButtonWe’ve been through a lot together these last few years, and Fenton will continue to aggressively pursue the needs of our students. Our parents and guardians at home are instrumental partners in education, and we value their feedback.

As we continue forward, parents are invited to participate in the 2022-23 annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of every child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness.

To take the survey please visit survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois. Your participation will help us understand your child’s conditions and guide our improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. We hope to get 100 percent participation from our Fenton family! Tell us what you think and how we can improve.

Thank you for your support.

To celebrate Kazimierz Pulaski Day, Fenton’s Polish Klub traveled to Chicago and toured the Polish Museum of America, which was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest ethnic museums in the United States. Dylan and Kaitlyn Thompson show off their St. Francis swag

Thompson Twins Both Sign to Bowl at University of St. Francis

Fenton seniors Dylan and Kaitlyn Thompson recently decided to continue their bowling careers at the University of St. Francis, an NAIA school located in south suburban Joliet, Illinois.

Both students were drawn to the welcoming environment at St. Francis and the close proximity to home. In reflection, they expressed great appreciation and admiration for their Fenton coaches.

“To start off, I would like to thank Coach Chappell,” Dylan said. “Coach Chappell and I knew each other from football so we already had a bond. But once I started bowling these last 2 years, our bond became closer. He was there for my highs and lows.”

Dylan was always inspired by Coach Chappell’s expression “It’s not about the size of the dog, it’s about the fight in the dog.” Dylan took to heart that confidence and personal drive to reach goals are extremely important qualities.

“I’m beyond blessed to have a coach and a mentor like Coach Chappell,” Dylan said.

Coach Chappell praised Dylan for his passion and hard work.

“He is an extremely dedicated bowler and has put his heart and soul into the sport since his sophomore year,” Coach Chappell said. “Dylan was both All Conference and Academic All Conference this year, which says a lot about him as a student athlete. The sky's the limit for Dylan, I expect to see great things from him while competing at St. Francis.”

Kaitlyn thanked Coaches Lee Cassidy and Ron Janik.

“These two coaches were glued to my side throughout the last 2 years of my high school bowling career,” Kaitlyn said. “They were able to push me until I finally reached my goal. Even when I reached my goal, they just knew that there was more in me than I knew for myself.

“I am proud to have these coaches in my life and they will always hold a special place in my heart as I carry these memories and their guidance with me into my college career,” Kaitlyn continued.

Coach Cassidy said Kaitlyn has certainly earned all of her accolades.

“She works endless hours to better herself as a bowler,” Coach Cassidy said. “Kaitlyn has really become an excellent bowler as well as a great leader among her teammates. I am sure she will be successful in any endeavor she pursues.”

Kaitlyn said her teammates are like sisters, and they came rushing to her with “the biggest hugs” when she announced her decision to play at the University of St. Francis.

“Without the help of my teammates, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the sport that I am truly committed to,” Kaitlyn said. “Every match, tournament, and practice we still found a way to create a powerful bond that eventually made into a sisterly bond. I am very thankful for them for being my biggest supporters through this decision making.”

Actual family is very important, as the Thompson family is a bowling family – evident by the star twins. They both thanked their parents for hours, days, and years of support.

“We were raised to breathe, speak, and act bowling,” Kaitlyn said. “My father, who was there for me since I started this journey, has never once doubted me for anything. Even when he wasn’t in the mood to bowl with me, he still stood there and coached me through every shot I made. My mother, who became my emotional support, was there to cheer me up at my lows and encourage me while in my biggest moments.”

Dylan agreed, saying he wouldn’t be where he is today without his parents.

“My mother is always teaching me about life and always encouraging me to go to my full potential whether it be in bowling or life itself,” Dylan said. “My father continues to teach me how to be a man in life. He was the reason I got into bowing and he taught me his ways to play the game, always pushing me to work harder and harder to get to my full potential.”

Kaitlyn and Dylan’s high school careers were almost mirrored as well, with both of them having success deep into sectionals or beyond.

“I want to thank my siblings as they were always by my side,” Kaitlyn said. “As for my twin brother, he was there for me on the lanes and off the lanes. I am so proud of what we both accomplished together and wish the best for us along the road.”

Dylan reached the State Finals in 2022, and has fond memories of all the laughs and cheers he shared with his teammates throughout that season and playoff run.

Faith is also an important part of Dylan’s life.

“I’m also thankful for God,” he said. “God keeps me on this planet earth everyday. I’ve realized every day isn’t guaranteed so make it like it’s your last.”

Kaitlyn shared her final words of wisdom.

“My last words for my teammates are no matter how hard something might seem, always try to beat it,” she explained. “I will forever cherish these moments in my life.”

Congratulations, Dylan and Kaitlyn!
