Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

I have a few updates to share, but first I want to start by congratulating Nicholas Ohanian for being selected by the Chicago Bears as their second recipient of the 2025 Community High School All-Star Award.

This Bears program, which is co-sponsored by Athletico Physical Therapy, highlights nine high school football players throughout Illinois who are making a positive impact in their community and school.

A representative from the Chicago Bears surprised Nicholas with a Chicago Bears backpack that isn’t available in stores and an official NFL football hand-painted with his names on it, the words “for demonstrating excellence in service to the community” and the All-Star program logo. He also gets $500 to donate to a charity of his choosing.

Nicholas was selected for his leadership on the team, which finished 6-3 and in the playoffs for the first time since 2013, as well as his exemplary academic record of a 3.8 GPA and membership in the National Honor Society.

Above all, the selection committee liked Nicholas’ 63 hours of community service, including many hours as a freshmen Bison Time mentor helping our newest students build strong study habits. Nicholas also is very active in our Link Crew, assisting in high-profile events like Freshman Orientation and Future Freshman Night. The Bears said Nicholas leads in a way that often goes unnoticed, like volunteering to clean concession stands after he’d spent all night playing on the field.

We were excited to sneak Nicholas’ family into Fenton for the surprise award. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Ohanian for being an outstanding partner to our teachers and coaches. You should be very proud.

While Nicholas has definitely earned this recognition, I would also like to point out that as of Friday all of our students combined have 25,050 and 45 minutes of community service during their time at Fenton. We have incredibly generous students!

International Women’s Day

Saturday, March 8th is International Women's Day and the month of March is Women's History Month. During this month, Fenton will celebrate the incredible success and achievements of strong women in our community and all over the world. On Friday, students and staff wore PURPLE, the color that symbolizes justice, dignity, and loyalty to the women's movement.

Approved 2025-2026 School Calendar

Finally, we know our students and their families are busy and have exciting lives to plan. Below is our approved school calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. You can also find it on the calendar page of our website by clicking here.

As we communicated previously, we’ve formally decided to start school later as a precaution relating to our STEM Wing construction project.

All construction is still on schedule to be completed by the first week of August. We don’t anticipate any major changes, rather the extra time would be applied to our move-in plans with the many small equipment installations and our teachers setting up their learning environments. We want classes to operate normally as soon as students arrive.

The first day of school is August 25. We made up some of those days in the middle of the year, for example not needing two days off for elections, but we will still end a little later. Graduation is scheduled for May 21 and Final Exams for all other students are May 28, May 29, and June 1.

Parent Survey

Fenton values its partnership with the parents and guardians of our students, and we want feedback on how our school can improve.

The best method for gathering wide-ranging feedback is through the 5Essentials Survey, which is operated by the University of Chicago. Through various questions, the survey is intended to measure these five indicators that positively affect school success:
  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

alt-text

This survey is handled by an outside organization and they do not share your email address or your answers with Fenton High School. University of Chicago asks if you would like to submit your email address in case you don’t finish the survey and want to continue later. Names are not collected.

The data sent to Fenton is also shown on our State School Report Card, and it includes general percentages of responding parents who agree or disagree with the stated questions or a percentage of responding parents who selected the multiple choice answers. No identifying information is revealed.

These are just a sample of the survey questions, but they show a good variety of areas where your feedback would be helpful and could make a difference moving forward:
  • What grade your student is in,
  • Technology available to parents at home,
  • How parents think their students feel about school,
  • How often parents interact with their student’s teachers,
  • How parents feel about the relationship with their student’s teachers,
  • If parents believe our school is preparing their students for college,
  • How often our school provides updates or invites parents into the school,
  • What communication methods (email, phone, text messages) do parents prefer,
  • What life factors prevent parents from attending school events,
  • How often do parents volunteer for school events or programs,
  • Parent opinions on the quality of our facilities,

Please take a few minutes to click on the link below and take the 5Essentials Parent Survey.

Fenton’s Fast-a-Thon is Tuesday, March 11th

Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan has started and we're excited to celebrate this special occasion! Did you know that Ramadan is observed by about 2 billion Muslims worldwide? We have several students at Fenton who are fasting during this holy month, and we'd love for you to experience what it's like too!

All are invited to join a one-day fast on Tuesday, March 11th and attend a celebratory (and free) Iftar dinner at 6:30 p.m. after the sun sets, which is when fasting is allowed to end. There will also be arts and craft activities in the ARC during all lunch periods.

Students and families interested in participating, learning about Ramadan, and attending our Iftar dinner, please click on the link below:

A Fenton student proudly donates blood on November 9, 2023

Give the Gift of Life – Donate Blood

Fenton's Student Council is seeking donors for their March 19 blood drive, which will take place between 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the front gym.

According to the Versiti Blood Center, about 37 out of every 100 Americans are eligible to donate blood but only 3-to-4 people donate each year. Fenton’s Student Council wants to raise that percentage!

All students 16 and older, their parents, siblings, and members of the community are invited to participate.

Student Council members will be in the front gym assisting the staff from Versiti Blood Centers. Everyone who donates blood will receive a free Just Donate hat.

Please read the following helpful tips:
  • Bring a photo ID
  • Students under the age of 18 will need a signed permission slip
  • Make sure to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating blood.
  • Enter through Door 1 (our main entrance) and proceed to the front gym.
  • Do not plan to participate in any sports or strenuous activities for the rest of the day after donating blood.

Students Learn More About Going to College

Thank you to all of the schools that visited Fenton on Monday, March 3 for our College Fair during all lunch periods. This was a great opportunity for students to meet admissions representatives and learn how to apply for admission or find out what classes they should take at Fenton over the next few years in order to qualify. We’re proud to show our students potential futures and empower them to take the next steps.

Football Player Signs to Play in College

Congratulations to Stephan Romas Jr. for signing to continue his football career at Aurora University. Teammates, friends, and family gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate this huge achievement.

Stephan is a two-way player who prefers playing to the defensive line but was invaluable on the offensive line protecting Fenton's quarterback this season. The Bison had a huge turnout this year, going 6-3 and returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Coach Farrell said part of this season's success is attributed to Fenton being more physical in the trenches. Congratulations, Stephan!
