Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Dear Fenton Families,

Passion and fun are this week’s theme. Both of them are great ingredients for learning.

To start, thank you to School Board Members Cary Lewis, John Radzinski, Kent Kovac and all the local officials who joined our incredible families for Sunday’s Spaghetti with a Song music fundraiser. Thank you for supporting Fenton's music programs, which are a labor of love. Music is fun and amazing, but it takes so much self discipline, practice, and very specific skills. Our music teachers, Mrs. Seredy Williams and Mr. Garett George, are two of the best and most passionate music educators anywhere. We’re so grateful to have them, and to have the amazing parents who operate the Music Boosters Organization. These parents volunteer an insane amount of hours to make sure their children can follow their passions.

And, of course, thank you and bravo to all the students who took to the stage and shared their talents. For some it’s easy and fun, but for others it’s still a new frontier they’re dipping their toes into. Everything I heard was fantastic, and now I can't wait to see the Spring Musical “Little Shop of Horrors” on April 20, 21, and 22.

Similarly, thank you to all the colleges and local businesses that joined us this past week during our alternating college fairs and career fairs. Our students benefit greatly from seeing real life examples of successful careers and the paths to get there. We want our students to be ready to build solid futures for themselves, and we work extremely hard to make sure they have as much information as possible to make the best decisions for themselves. The goal is for them to find something they’re passionate about!

Here’s what we did: on Tuesday students met employees from a variety of organizations and learned about the company's’ missions, the employees’ daily work, and the credentials necessary to work there. Then on Wednesday, students met a variety of colleges to see if they offer courses that could lead to the careers the students learned about the day before. It repeated on Thursday and Friday. Huge Shout Out to Mrs. Michelle Papanicolaou and Mrs. Rachel Georgakis for recruiting and coordinating all the visitors. These are potentially life changing introductions, and I’m so proud to have them in our Fenton Family.

Finally, Spirit Weeks are so much fun and we have another one next week as we stroll into Spring Break! See our flier for all the themes and definitely keep an eye out for Principal Bentsen and Assistant Principal Bray – they’re always leading the way with epic outfits. Participating in Spirit Weeks help students feel more connected to their learning environment and their peers. Let’s see what you’ve got, Bison Nation!

I hope our Fenton Families have relaxing plans for Spring Break. We’re almost there!

Parents Invited to Complete 5Essentials Survey

5Essentials of Education ButtonWe’ve been through a lot together these last few years, and Fenton will continue to aggressively pursue the needs of our students. Our parents and guardians at home are instrumental partners in education, and we value their feedback.

As we continue forward, parents are invited to participate in the 2022-23 annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of every child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness.

To take the survey please visit survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois. Your participation will help us understand your child’s conditions and guide our improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. We hope to get 100 percent participation from our Fenton family! Tell us what you think and how we can improve.

Thank you for your support.

Mrs. Larson's class poses with several consecutive numbers of Pi

Celebrating Pi Day

March 14... 3/14.... is Pi Day! This amazing irrational number (3.1415926...) was celebrated by math classes with some fun and competition! To start the celebration, Math teachers gave every student a Pi Day pencil and set up Pi Day temporary tattoos stations. Then the classes learned some historical and mathematical Pi facts, followed by a competitive Pi Day Kahoot Trivia game. The top 6 winners of classes earned a Pi Day treat! Happy Pi Day to everyone!

Dissecting Sharks

Students in Biology 2 learned about the inner workings of sharks….literally. Mr. Latka’s unit on chondrichthyes (cartilage fish) involves dissecting a shark, and students teamed up in groups of four on Tuesday to explore all the scientific marvels of life itself.

Planning for College

Thank you to our alumna and the Marquette University Office of Admissions for being guest speakers at our March 13 College Planning Night. Both groups shared insights on terminology students will see on applications, what activities and grades admissions counselors are looking for on applications, and how strenuous some applications can be. Juniors and seniors who are curious about college or who intend to go to college but are still undecided should contact their Fenton counselors for more information.

Sophia Sosa Places 3rd at IWCOA State Finals

Congratulations to junior Sophia Sosa for earning 3rd place in the 155lbs bracket at this weekend’s IWCOA Girls State Championships in downstate Springfield. Sophia had 4 tough wins against high level opponents but lost to the eventual state champion in the semifinals.

The Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) is comprised of coaches, officials, media and contributors from across the state that support each other, the IHSA, and the further development of the sport – including hosting state finals for non-varsity wrestlers and female wrestlers. IWCOA was the original playoff tournament before IHSA incorporated girls wrestling a few years ago.
