Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen
Dear Fenton School Community,
On Wednesday we gathered together in the fieldhouse to collectively celebrate our latest Speech State Champion. Senior Tereza Belej won 1st place and the individual Speech State Championship for Informative Speaking at the IHSA Speech State Finals two weekends ago.
Tereza’s victory is our 8th individual speech state championship in the last 7 years. We are very proud of our speech program and the countless hours of hard work our students dedicate to their craft under the guidance of coaches Nicole Hendricks and Melissa Feinberg.
Student recognition not only celebrates the current achievement, but it provides others with a good example.
Again, congratulations to Tereza and thank you to Bison Nation for showing great school spirit.
Evening of Black Excellence
The very next day, on Thursday, we celebrated Black Excellence as part of Black History Month.
Big Shout Out to the incredible students in our Black Student Union (BSU) for their part in the Evening of Black Excellence. They MCed the event and presented quick facts about both prominent and little known African Americans throughout our history.
Judge Shantelle Porter, DuPage County’s first African American judge, was one of our guest speakers. We appreciate her time and value her partnership as we show our students that anything is possible.
Fenton School Board President Cary Lewis and Board Member Sylvia Hayde also took the stage to deliver remarks. This annual event would not have been possible without their support. Thank you President Lewis and Board Member Hayde!
Most importantly, thank you to all the students and families that joined us so we could learn together, celebrate together, and share a meal together.
Empowered Parents Series
We understand that keeping your children safe is your top priority, and Fenton High School is continuing its commitment to supporting the safety and well-being of our students. In collaboration with YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, we are pleased to offer Empowered Parents, a three-part educational series designed to equip parents with essential knowledge and practical tools to recognize warning signs, protect their children, and respond appropriately to concerns.
The series will be delivered over three months and will cover the following critical topics:
-
Recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse
-
Protecting children from grooming and sexual exploitation
-
Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault
This new resource, as well as other programming offered by Fenton, can be found on our new “Parent Resources” page on our website under the parents tab.
Our goal is to provide parents with valuable tools to support their children’s safety, growth, and well-being. By increasing awareness and preparedness, we can work together to prevent harm and ensure every child feels safe and protected.
We invite you to begin this important series with Part One: Protecting Our Youth – A Guide to Recognizing and Responding to Child Sexual Abuse.

Parent Survey
Fenton values its partnership with the parents and guardians of our students, and we want feedback on how our school can improve.
The best method for gathering wide-ranging feedback is through the 5Essentials Survey, which is operated by the University of Chicago. Through various questions, the survey is intended to measure these five indicators that positively affect school success:
-
Effective Leaders
-
Collaborative Teachers
-
Involved Families
-
Supportive Environments
-
Ambitious Instruction
This survey is handled by an outside organization and they do not share your email address or your answers with Fenton High School. University of Chicago asks if you would like to submit your email address in case you don’t finish the survey and want to continue later. Names are not collected.
The data sent to Fenton is also shown on our State School Report Card, and it includes general percentages of responding parents who agree or disagree with the stated questions or a percentage of responding parents who selected the multiple choice answers. No identifying information is revealed.
These are just a sample of the survey questions, but they show a good variety of areas where your feedback would be helpful and could make a difference moving forward:
-
What grade your student is in,
-
Technology available to parents at home,
-
How parents think their students feel about school,
-
How often parents interact with their student’s teachers,
-
How parents feel about the relationship with their student’s teachers,
-
If parents believe our school is preparing their students for college,
-
How often our school provides updates or invites parents into the school,
-
What communication methods (email, phone, text messages) do parents prefer,
-
What life factors prevent parents from attending school events,
-
How often do parents volunteer for school events or programs,
-
Parent opinions on the quality of our facilities,
Please take a few minutes to click on the link below and take the 5Essentials Parent Survey.
Give the Gift of Life – Donate Blood
Fenton's Student Council is seeking donors for their March 19 blood drive, which will take place between 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the front gym.
According to the Versiti Blood Center, about 37 out of every 100 Americans are eligible to donate blood but only 3-to-4 people donate each year. Fenton’s Student Council wants to raise that percentage!
All students 16 and older, their parents, siblings, and members of the community are invited to participate.
Student Council members will be in the front gym assisting the staff from Versiti Blood Centers. Everyone who donates blood will receive a free Just Donate hat.
Please read the following helpful tips:
-
Bring a photo ID
-
Students under the age of 18 will need a signed permission slip
-
Make sure to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating blood.
-
Enter through Door 1 (our main entrance) and proceed to the front gym.
-
Do not plan to participate in any sports or strenuous activities for the rest of the day after donating blood.

Fenton Students Organize Fast-a-Thon
Led by sophomore Preshay Idrees, Fenton hosted a Fast-a-Thon on Tuesday, March 11 at dawn. The informational event included students, their families, and staff sharing their experiences and learning more about Ramadan, which is a sacred time of the year for Muslims. The group broke their fasting at dawn by sharing tasty food from local restaurants.
Tasty Food with Sweet Tunes Boost Fundraising for Music Boosters
Parents, family, members of the community, and alumni enjoyed an afternoon of fun songs on March 9 during the Fenton Music Boosters annual Spaghetti With a Song fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who supported the event, especially parents from the Music Boosters.
Music is fun and amazing, but it takes so much self discipline, practice, and very specific skills. Thank you to our music students for sharing your talents. All money raised is going toward scholarships and other Boosters programming.
One alumni drove over an hour from Sandwich, Illinois to attend the fundraiser!
Basketball Player Signs to Play in College
