Update from Superintendent Ongtengco
Dear Fenton Families,
Welcome back to school for the Second Semester of the 2023-2024 school year. We hope you are loving the new school spirit we’ve added to our front foyer, the student commons, blended learning areas, and our front gym. This is truly the HOME OF THE BISON!
We have three important topics ahead of us that I’d like to review:
-
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
-
Our Career Fair on Thursday
-
Fenton’s $65 million facilities referendum
Martin Luther King Jr.
On Monday, our school will join the country in commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who devoted his life to a legacy of nonviolent revolution, civil rights, and all-inclusive equality.
As we honor and remember Dr. King’s legacy, let us reinforce our commitment to create a more inclusive community for all of our students, faculty, and staff in every aspect of our school. As educators, we realize that the injustices denounced by Dr. King nearly six decades ago are alive whenever any of our children or students feel unwelcome or marginalized because of who they are, what they look like, where they come from, or the language they speak. Each of us plays an important role in actively building a more equitable community through our words and actions on a daily basis. Together, we can help build a future that reflects the principles that Dr. King stood for.
With respect and hope, have a wonderful and reflective Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
- MLK, Jr.
Career Fair on Thursday, January 18th
Our evolving Career Pathways program focuses on making sure every student has a potential career in mind by the time they graduate. That means students are being inspired by meeting real professionals and experiencing hands-on jobs.
Thursday, January 18th is our annual Career Fair and a prime opportunity for all of our students to meet industry leaders from over 40 local businesses ranging from technology, healthcare, finance, legal, and more. The fair is designed for students of all ages to ask these professionals about their day-to-day job duties, the training required to get their job, and the rewards of their hard work.
I encourage all families to talk with their students about potential career interests and then show up on Thursday with a lot of questions.

Facilities Referendum
We’ve taken great strides these last few years to improve and responsibly care for our facilities and learning spaces. The truth is, however, our building is from the 1950s and numerous core issues need to be addressed.
District 100 will ask voters on March 19 to approve a $65 million referendum plan to comprehensively repair and remodel areas of our building.
The proposed building referendum, if approved, would replace vital infrastructure such as HVAC, roofing, interior ceilings, major circuit breakers, and water mains. It would also address student health and wellness by gutting and replacing all restrooms and locker rooms, as well as addressing student safety by installing a sprinkler system and replacing our fire alarm.
In terms of academics, the referendum would invest money in renovating existing classrooms in our science hallway and our career and technical education hallways, specifically our culinary and construction trades classrooms.
You can find more details about the proposed referendum at www.fenton100.org/referendum. If you have any questions about the referendum, don't hesitate to send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org
Let’s Go Bison!

The Twitter account: @FHSArt1, highlights Fenton's Art Department and community art events. Each month three artists are celebrated in a post titled, "Masterpieces of the Month." December’s selections include photo students Jocelyn Martinez-Salas, Alec Brixius, and Fatima Sanchez. Congratulations to all!
No Instruments? No Problem!
Thank you to the incredible performers from No Comment A Cappella for visiting Fenton on Wednesday, January 10 and inspiring our students with song after song from your award winning repertoire. No Comment A Cappella is a musical group composed of students at the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana. Their visit showed Fenton students one of many possible next steps for those who want to pursue music after high school.
Alejandro Diaz Breaks Basketball Milestone
Congratulations to Fenton senior Alejandro Diaz for surpassing 1,000 points in his career as a Bison Baller. Alejandro achieved this milestone over winter break during a 59-19 victory over West Chicago. He was an All State Honorable Mention last year and is leading the Mighty Bison on a 17-3 season and a top 25 state ranking.
The all-time points leader for the boys basketball program is Diamon King with 1,208 points, a total that was set in the 2019-2020 school year.
Wrestling Seniors Take The Spotlight
Our wrestling team had quite the unique Senior Night matchup against Addison Trail on Thursday. Our auditorium was retrofit for a prime time, under the lights showdown. Hats off to Coach Brian Hastings and his staff for giving our students a spectacular experience in their last meet at home.

All Fenton students and families are invited to the 5 p.m. ceremony and the game that follows at 5:30 p.m.

Free Flu Vaccinations
With cold and flu season upon us, the Fenton Health Office is encouraging students and their families to get a seasonal flu shot as a precaution to prevent or minimize the effects of an infection.
Our community partners at DuPage Health Coalition have a free Jewel-Osco flu shot voucher for families facing economic hardships. Simply click on the link below, print the voucher, and give it to the pharmacist at any Jewel-Osco in DuPage County before February 28th. The pharmacist might ask for proof that you live in DuPage County, so be prepared to show your driver’s license or any bill with your address.
If you do not have a printer at home, then ask your student to print this voucher in the ARC at school or have them visit the Health Office.
