Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen
Dear Fenton School Community,
Welcome to 2025! Thank you for an outstanding first semester of the school year!! Highlights include:
-
We had an incredible Band & Choir Holiday Concert December 15th. Next year will be the 100th annual concert!
-
Jan David Olmos was selected to the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All State Honors Choir, which performs in January;
-
Our fall play “The One Act Play that Goes Wrong” was a big hit with the community too;
-
Girls swimmer Veronica Losak set a school record in the 50M Freestyle event;
-
Girls cross country runner Josslyn Wade became the fastest female runner on our course in school history, on her way to qualifying for state and then earning the All-State Runner designation for finishing 16th out of 243 runners;
-
Boys soccer won another Regional Championship;
-
Football returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2013; and
-
Fenton’s Shakespeare SLAM performers qualified for the Final Bout at Navy Pier.
Our data shows more students are involved in afterschool sports or clubs than last year, which is exciting! More students choosing to learn and choosing to be invested in our school will lead to more growth and achievement.
Wheels 4 Wisdom
Our staff is also excelling. Right before Winter Break Fenton’s automotive teacher Mark Drelicharz and Director of Community Relations Rick Kambic were recognized at the Bensenville School District 2 Board of Education meeting for their involvement in the Bensenville Youth Coalition’s Wheels 4 Wisdom program.
District 2 teachers in the Bensenville Education Association and members of the District 2 administration chose to recognize the Wheels 4 Wisdom program with their 2024 Friends of Education Award.
The Bensenville Youth Coalition is a non-profit organization made up of diverse community partners, including Mr. Kambic on behalf of Fenton. Their mission is to recognize, promote, and develop youth by strengthening their connections with the community.
In May 2024, the Bensenville Youth Coalition donated previously owned bicycles to District 2 students who live within 1.5 miles of their schools (and are therefore ineligible for bus services) so they would have secure transportation to and from school.
The Bensenville Youth Coalition ensured each bike was ready to ride by working with Mr. Drelicharz and his Fenton students to fix and repair bikes as necessary. In addition, during Bike Safety Month, the Bensenville Youth Coalition, in collaboration with other local organizations, helped sponsor a Bicycle Safety workshop where eight students were provided bicycles, a new bike lock and helmet.
This program not only provided our future Bison with an opportunity for healthy outdoor activities but it also helped District 2 in addressing student attendance by identifying students who could most benefit from transportation support.
Future Freshmen Night
Speaking of our Future Freshmen, we will see them on Thursday, January 16th for our Future Freshmen Night. Our staff and student leaders can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2029! We know some of them are current Fenton Families with a second or third student about to become a Fenton Bison.
The purpose of this program is to assist in the transition from middle school to high school, explain the course selection process, and build awareness of elective courses and extracurricular opportunities. We have extensive course offerings that may be of interest to these incoming students, including established career pathways to explore. Please enter at Door 1 for evening events.
We start with an Athletics and Activities Fair from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. This is an optional event, but will allow families to meet our amazing athletic coaches and club sponsors at their leisure. At 6:15 p.m. we will move to the Front Gym for the Principal’s Welcome remarks. Finally, from 6:45 to 8 p.m. there will be a variety of options for families to choose from, including an Electives Fair to learn more about the optional classes, student-led tours of the building, and multiple informational sessions on a variety of topics – all available in both English and Spanish.
We look forward to meeting all of our new students on Thursday!
Next Year’s School Calendar
Looking further ahead, we’re still collecting feedback from our families regarding our plans to start the 2025-2026 school year a little later than normal, likely around two weeks later, as a precaution relating to our STEM Wing construction project.
As we communicated in December, all construction is still on schedule to be completed by the first week of August. We don’t anticipate any major changes, rather the extra time would be applied to our move-in plans with the many small equipment installations and our teachers setting up their learning environments. We want classes to operate normally as soon as students arrive.
We are considering options that would limit how late the 2025-2026 school year extends. For example, the State holiday that closes schools for General Elections won’t apply next year and we can use that day for instruction. Similarly, you may recall that the Monday before elections we also took off, so that is not necessary next year either. Other flexibilities we utilize from year to year will be reviewed.
A change to our First Day of School should not affect any competitive sports or activities.
We value and care about our partners at home. If you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding typical days off throughout the school year that are important to your family, please feel free to complete our survey by clicking here.
Once again, welcome back!
Sam Bentsen, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent

Fenton Football Players Earn Recognition in Turnaround Season
Congratulations to four of our Bison Football Players for earning significant recognition for individual achievements in the 2024 football season, which resulted in a 6-3 team record and Fenton’s first playoff appearance since 2013. Please join us in congratulating:
Jack Tinajero
Jack Tinajero (#2) was named ALL-AREA in both the wide receiver and defensive back positions. Jack had a great senior year on both sides of the ball. He was the Bison's leading receiver with 943 yards receiving and 12 TDs, along with 35 yards rushing and a TD. On defense Jack finished with 62 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 4 fumble recoveries, and 6 interceptions. Jack was the Bison's defensive MVP for the season.

Fenton Wrestlers Take the Big Stage
Our wrestling team had quite the unique Senior Night matchup against Larkin on Thursday, January 9. Our auditorium was retrofitted for a prime time, under the lights showdown. Hats off to Coach Brian Hastings and his staff for giving our students a spectacular experience in their last meet at home.
Touring the Tivoli
Before winter break Fenton’s Film Club visited the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove to see a movie and experience a little bit of history. The Tivoli Theatre is a movie theater built in 1928. First opened on Christmas Day, 1928, this theatre was the second in the United States to open with sound movies. The theatre was designed by Van Gurten and Van Gurten architects and has 1,012 seats.
