Update from Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

Last year we launched Future Ready Fenton Day and it was very popular and successful! As you’ve already seen in your email this week, we’re getting ready to do it again on Thursday, February 5th! Please watch for more updates so you’re familiar with what your student will be doing and any potential permission slips can be returned in time.

Future Ready Fenton Day is an all-school event designed to support our students and prepare them for success. This new initiative provides grade-specific activities focused on testing, career exploration, and college readiness.

Fenton students participate in a Health Sciences career exploration during Future Ready Fenton Day in 2025

This special day will accommodate state-mandated ACCESS testing for our more than 400 students who are required by the state to take this annual test. Additionally, all juniors who are not required to take the ACCESS test will take the Pre-ACT Test. This testing opportunity prepares our students for the upcoming state-wide testing date in April. We’ve designed the day to ensure an optimal testing environment for these students while offering meaningful opportunities for all other students to prepare for their futures.

Here’s a general overview:

  • Freshmen who are not testing will visit and tour local colleges.

  • Sophomores who are not testing will go on Career Exploration Field Trips to area organizations or colleges aligned with their interests, as indicated in School Links.

  • Juniors will be taking the ACCESS test or Pre-ACT test.

  • Seniors who are not testing can focus on graduation requirements, such as community service and the Constitution Test.

Attendance on this day is required for all students in grades 9, 10, and 11, as well as seniors who need to take the ACCESS test. All students required to be at school on February 5th will start the day at 8 a.m.

This is an exciting opportunity to put our students in the best position to succeed. Thinking about life after high school and taking the appropriate steps in the meantime are important objectives for every student.

Thank you to all the staff members who are making this possible.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Sam Bentsen, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Glenbard Parent Series Offers Parent Program on Re-Engaging Students

Fenton is affiliated with the Glenbard Parent Series, which is a large group of area schools working together to find guest speakers and produce informative literature to help families navigate life with a growing teenager.

On Tuesday January 27, guest speakers Jenny Anderson and Dr. Rebecca Winthrop will host an event titled “Checked-Out / Stressed-Out: Moving Kids From Disengagement to Drive.”

Supporting engaged learning is a goal for educators and parents alike and is crucial to addressing issues like absenteeism, boredom and the teen mental health crisis. Participants will discover how to nurture their teen’s self-awareness, resilience, and internal curiosity while fostering confident, capable learners.

The free program is available on Zoom at 7 p.m. Click here for the Zoom link on the Glenbard Parent Series website.

We invite parents to bookmark the Glenbard Parent Series website and sign up for their emails.

Exploring Opportunities in College

About 100 freshmen students split into three groups and went on college visits to either Loyola University, University of Illinois Chicago, or Dominican University on Thursday, January 22.
College and Career Counselor Rachel Georgakis gave a presentation before the groups left, sharing information about what to expect on a college visit, college affordability, and the types of postsecondary paths available to them after high school.
Fenton continues to provide students with experiences that inspire them to think about how the choices they make while in high school will impact their future goals.

Fenton Faces Recipients Celebrated at Breakfast

Our "Fenton Faces" program acknowledges dedicated students for their outstanding aptitude, participation, or specific contributions to a class.
Each department is asked to select a couple of students per semester for its Fenton Face(s). Each teacher that nominates a student for this honor is asked to write a few sentences about the student and why they were selected.
Students selected in the first semester were honored during a breakfast before school on Wednesday. Partway through the breakfast, Principal Ward and Assistant Principal Bray called up each student one-by-one and read the nomination from their teacher before presenting them with a certificate.
New this year, three STAFF members were also selected for the Fenton Faces award!
Congratulations to all!
