Update from Superintendent Ongtengco
Dear Fenton Families,
Bus drivers are usually the first adults from Fenton to greet our students in the morning and the last to tell them “good job” at the end of the day. They make sure our students get to and from school safely, and they work late to drive our teams and clubs to their events. They’re even seen in the stands cheering on our Mighty Bison!
Wednesday, February 22 was National Bus Driver Appreciation Day but I want to encourage our Fenton Family to regularly express your appreciation for these selfless public servants who navigate our streets and protect our children. Thank you to all the Fenton bus drivers!
Our Bison Chess team is one of many groups that explore the world and waive the Fenton flag victoriously. This week our Fenton Board of Education recognized the chess team for qualifying for the IHSA State Finals for the 16th straight year! Our board members were in awe of this student achievement.
The amazement went even further when Ms. Downen explained that David Severiano went undefeated (7 wins and 0 losses) while at the State Finals, something no one else at Fenton has ever done! This just proves that accepting big challenges and trusting your teachers can lead to major success. Congratulations to the Fenton Chess Team and a Huge Bison Shout Out to David for making HISTORY.
Finally, juniors have the SAT exam on April 12. It’s hard to believe, but that’s not very far off. A good score on the SAT can open a lot of doors for our students who want to continue their education after Fenton, and doing well could lead to others realizing their options. The best way to prepare is to join an organized course, and here at Fenton we just finished our first two weeks of offering SAT Prep sessions with certified teachers. These free prep sessions are offered both before and after school all the way until Spring Break. I urge all our juniors to utilize this resource and make sure they get the highest score possible. Contact Assistant Principal Julia Bray (bray@fenton100.org) if you have any questions.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org
Let's Go Bison!

Parents Invited to Complete 5Essentials Survey
We’ve been through a lot together these last few years, and Fenton will continue to aggressively pursue the needs of our students. Our parents and guardians at home are instrumental partners in education, and we value their feedback.
As we continue forward, parents are invited to participate in the 2022-23 annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of every child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity allows you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness.
To take the survey please visit survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois. Your participation will help us understand your child’s conditions and guide our improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. We hope to get 100 percent participation from our Fenton family! Tell us what you think and how we can improve.
Thank you for your support.

Gianna Krygier Signs to Play Volleyball in College
Fenton senior Gianna Krygier recently decided to continue her volleyball career at Iowa Wesleyan University, an NAIA school located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Gianna plans to study kinesiology in hopes to become an athletic trainer.
“First off I would like to thank Coach Ashley Miller for giving me the opportunity to continue my volleyball career at Iowa Wesleyan,” Gianna said. “I chose to continue my volleyball career at Iowa Wesleyan because I fell in love with the environment that the coaches and players set out for incoming teammates.”
Miller said she was very excited to recruit Gianna into the Tigers volleyball program. She said Gianna’s upbeat personality is an important element to their team’s future success.
“We started off with a quick phone call and from the beginning she was very excited, optimistic and bubbly. She was very easy to talk with and very clear about the program that she wanted to join next,” Tigers Coach Miller said, while noting the positivity was glowing during Gianna’s visit as well. “I know she is eager to help us accomplish our goals next fall and I can't wait to see the impact she is going to make.
Bison Head Coach Adam Bloniarz took over the Fenton program this year and said he was extremely fortunate to inherit Gianna, who led the Upstate Eight Conference in aces and earned an All Conference Award this season as a senior team captain.
“Right away I knew she was a leader and would help this team win,” Coach Bloniarz said. “She has a great attitude on learning and is willing to put in the work to perfect her craft. As a setter she has one of the most difficult jobs on the floor and she helped lead this team to a 25-11 season, the most wins in program history.”
Coach Bloniarz and Gianna both gave credit to former Coach Kelly Torres for establishing a strong, but positive goal-oriented culture on the team.
“I especially want to thank Coach Kelly Torres for supporting me not only as a player but as a person. She has had such a great impact on me,” Gianna said. “Coach Torres was always pushing me to my limits and making sure I always gave full effort no matter the struggle on or off the court.”
Coach Torres said Gianna was a student athlete that she looked forward to coaching every single day.
“Gianna is an amazing leader, has great spirit and energy, and has worked incredibly hard these past four years to become a state-ranked setter,” Coach Torres said. “I am so proud of her and her dedication to our sport. She will be an asset to her school and team!”
But even with determination and drive, Gianna said her hard work would not be possible without the love and support of friends and family.
“I would like to thank my mom for always supporting me and always being there for me,” Gianna said. “I would also like to thank my dad for being tough on me and never letting me give less than 100 percent. Finally, I want to thank my friends for showing non-stop support whether they were on my team or in the stands. Your support will live with me forever.”
Congratulations, Gianna!
