Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Dear Fenton Families,

We hope you enjoyed your Valentine’s Day and our Spread the Love Spirit Week! With that being said, my theme for this letter is love and unity. Below you will find updates on
  • Food For Families
  • Presidents Day
  • Fenton’s Facility Referendum

Food For Families

On the day before Valentine’s Day, School Board President Cary Lewis joined with 32 student volunteers and four administrators to unload a semi truck from Northern Illinois Food Bank, sort the food to create family packs, and then distribute to more than 200 families in need.

We know this event as Food For Families. It’s a partnership with the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry and a great opportunity for students to give back to their community. All money used to buy food came from fundraising.

As I stood there directing traffic, I could see our students’ eyes get wide when they looked down the bus lane at a seemingly endless line of cars. Our team consisted of students all across the social gambit, but at the end of the day none of those labels mattered, because we were all simple public servants helping our neighbors in a community we love.

It might only be enough food for a couple of days, but that little bit can be critical to families navigating work shortages or suffering large medical expenses. No one should go hungry!  As Mr. Kambic always tells our student volunteers, it’s not easy to ask for help. I’m proud of the grace and hard work demonstrated by our incredible Fenton Bison. These are meaningful, selfless acts that make a huge difference in the lives of our neighbors and unite us as a family.

We have one more of these food distributions and Mr. Kambic is hard at work trying to fundraise the money needed to purchase mobile pantries. If you or someone you know is looking to make a tax deductible donation to a worthy cause, please call our school and ask for Mr. Kambic.

No School Monday

We hope Bison Nation enjoys the long weekend. There is no school on Monday, February 19 in honor of Presidents Day. This federal holiday honors President George Washington, who helped create the United States and the democratic values we enjoy, as well as President Abraham Lincoln, who guided us through the Civil War and abolished slavery. President Washington was born on February 22 and President Lincoln was born on February 12. Both of these men have extraordinary legacies and we’re thankful for their sacrifices.

Referendum Town Hall Saturday, March 2

With early voting underway, we continue to engage with our community regarding the proposed $65 million referendum on the March 19 ballot. You have likely seen our administrators giving presentations at various school events. We invite everyone to our Referendum Town Hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 here at Fenton. This is a prime opportunity to ask questions directly to myself and our leadership team.

Meet Fenton administrators and learn more about the proposed Referendum

Our goal is for everyone to be as informed as possible when they vote. We don’t care which way you vote, but please take the time to review our proposal. Our plan aims to renovate and sustain this school we love for the long term.

The Fenton website is still a leading tool. Please utilize and get immersed in all the assembled web pages:
www.fenton100.org/referendum – Facility Referendum Home Page

As always, Fenton administrators will be on-hand at numerous special and regular school functions. Please feel free to ask for a referendum team member or send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org if you have questions.

Bison Boys Basketball Wins Conference for the First Time Ever

Congratulations to Coach Chaz Taft and the boys basketball program for winning the Upstate Eight Conference Championship for the first time since Fenton joined in 2018.  The Fenton varsity boys basketball team took turns cutting down the net following their 40-28 Senior Night victory over West Chicago. It was their first home game since clinching the title in a 42-27 rout of perennial conference powerhouse South Elgin. Fenton closed out the season at 27-4 overall and 17-1 in conference play.

Check next week’s newsletter for more photos from Senior Night festivities.

Join the Bison as they host Lakes High School at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21 in the Fenton Fieldhouse for the Regional Semifinals.

Students Learn about Emmett Till in Black History Month Field Trip

The Black Student Union and 197 other students joined an in-school field trip on February 7 to learn about the life and tragic death of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old boy who was lynched in 1955 after being accused of offending a white woman in a Mississippi grocery store. Students heard from local historians and friends of the Till family, Mike and Tina Small. Our students, teachers, and the historians talked about the trial, its broader implications for American society at the time, and its relevance today. Thank you to Mr. Lorenzo Rubio and Ms. Jessica Muscarello for coordinating a powerful Black History Month activity for our students.
