Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

Thank you to all the families that attended Open House on Thursday evening to learn about numerous school-wide topics and to meet our teachers. We want school and home to work as one. Getting to know our teachers, their expectations, and how Fenton operates is a perfect way to start the school year. It’s important that parents and guardians stay in touch with their students’ teachers, counselors, coaches, and club sponsors throughout the school year. Together we will lead our students to success.

We also want to thank our outstanding student volunteers from the National Honor Society and the Bison Link Crew. These dedicated volunteers were very helpful in showing our parents how to get from class to class, and answering general questions. These positive student characteristics are a direct result of our strong partnership between home and our teaching staff.

Presenters will cover sexting, cyber bullying, sextortion, the dangers of using social media, and how to report a cyber crime – among other topics. Click here to see our event flier.

We are excited to once again host athletic contests and a variety of extracurricular activities in our home stadium. To celebrate completion of our stadium renovation, we are offering free admission to our first home football game on Friday, September 6.

We have a brief opening ceremony at 6:15 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7 p.m. All students, especially those whose teams or activities take place in the stadium, are invited to this celebration. We’re also inviting all community members and staff to join us in celebrating this new asset.

As a reminder, artificial turf and an IHSA regulation track were installed as a result of our water mitigation project needing to dig inside the stadium to replace old drainage pipes.

Let us know if you have any questions about the new year, our upcoming events, or would like more information about the resources we showcased at Open House.

Learning about Historical Artifacts and Museum Exhibits

Students in numerous World History classes enjoyed learning about historical artifacts and what goes into a museum exhibit during an internal field trip on Wednesday, August 28.
John Maniatis, a registrar with the First Division Museum at Cantigny, visited Fenton to explain his career, his duties at Cantigny, and his personal studies into Ancient Greece. Mr. Maniatis brought several of his replica Greek artifacts and books to show students in the Fenton Auditorium.
Students will soon take their research on a Golden Age Civilization of their choosing and build a pretend museum exhibit out of the most interesting and relevant information they find. Those exhibits will then be on display together in a pretend museum for all of Fenton to browse. Students need to be extremely knowledgeable about the information and artifacts they choose to display because visitors of the pretend museum will be told to ask questions about each exhibit.
Mr. Maniatis also reviewed museum vocabulary that accompanies studying and displaying of historical information. Other topics included how to appropriately arrange artifacts and information in an exhibit, the use of lighting, as well as how to make an exhibit engaging or interactive for the visitors. Finally, the group talked about how curators measure the success of an exhibit.

Softball Coach Mello Named Sectional Coach of the Year

The Illinois Softball Coaches Association named Fenton’s Dave Mello as 2023-2024 Coach of the Year for Class 3A Sectional 4. There are eight sectionals for schools in Class 3A and Sectional 4 covers a large portion of the Chicago suburbs.

“I am very honored to receive this award - however, this is certainly a TEAM award as opposed to an individual award. I can’t thank our coaching staff and our players enough for all of their hard work and commitment to our program!” Coach Mello said on Twitter.

The Bison finished last season 17-19 with one player earning All State Honors. Though facing a tough schedule, they outscored their opponents 293 runs to 276.

Congratulations, Coach Mello!
