Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

We are in May and it’s the final few weeks of the school year. A news article on our homepage has a list of important dates for the Class of 2025 and their families. Please check it frequently so you’re aware and able to participate in all the exciting celebrations.

Interim Principal Kate Ward is a constant figure at all of these events and we’re very fortunate to have her leading our school. We shared those feelings with her on Thursday for Principal Appreciation Day. We started the day with free donuts for a school-wide recognition of Mrs. Ward.

Mrs. Ward consistently goes above and beyond to support our students, empower our staff, and foster a school community grounded in care, equity, and excellence. From big-picture vision to the smallest details that make our days run smoother, Mrs. Ward is at the center of it all.

That includes celebrating Lunch Hero Day with the staff in the cafeteria. We appreciate their hard work day-in and day-out to makes sure our students are fed, and Mrs. Ward was there to lead their recognition on Friday.

Group Interpretation

Fenton’s Group Interpretation was recognized for their 3rd place finish at the State tournament. Their history-making performance of “Ride the Cyclone” earned them Fenton’s best finish in this event since 1979.

YWCA Provides Child Sexual Abuse Resources to Fenton Teachers and Parents

We understand that keeping your children safe is your top priority, and Fenton High School is committed to supporting the safety and well-being of our students. We are continuing our partnership with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago to offer Part 3 of the Empowered Parents Series and we also welcomed them to our most recent faculty meeting for professional development.

Fenton faculty participate in Professional Development throughout the year, including on some Mondays before students arrive at 10 a.m. On Monday, April 28th representatives from the YWCA presented at Fenton's all-faculty meeting to share information, suggestions, and warning signs related to child sexual abuse and the educator's role in prevention and response. The session covered:
  • the prevalence of child sexual abuse
  • why children don't tell
  • grooming and sextortion
  • victim centered responses when disclosure occurs
  • recognizing our own biases
  • bystander interventions

Empowered Parents is a three-part educational series designed to equip parents with essential knowledge and practical tools to recognize warning signs, protect their children, and respond appropriately to concerns.

The series will be delivered over three months and will cover the following critical topics:
  • Recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse
  • Protecting children from grooming and sexual exploitation
  • Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault

This new resource, as well as other programming offered by Fenton, can be found on our new “Parent Resources” page on our website under the parents tab.

Our goal is to provide parents with valuable tools to support their children’s safety, growth, and well-being. By increasing awareness and preparedness, we can work together to prevent harm and ensure every child feels safe and protected.

We invite you to continue this important series with Part Three: Breaking barriers, teaching consent, and responding to disclosures of abuse or sexual assault

See Tomorrow’s Business Leaders at Incubator Pitch Night

The public is invited to attend Fenton’s inaugural INCubator Pitch Night on May 8th in the Fenton Auditorium. Visitors can tour the project booths from 5 to 6 p.m., while the Final Pitches are scheduled for 6:15 to 8 p.m. The evening will closely resemble the hit TV show Shark Tank, with real money going toward real business ideas.

Students in the full year Entrepreneurship class (also known as INCubator) have the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product or service and incorporate it into a real-world business they own. Guided by real-world entrepreneurs and local industry-leading mentors, students experience the full range of business operations, including ideation, research, marketing, accounting, human resources, as well as the legal aspects of running a business.

The course culminates in Pitch Night, where student teams present their innovative ideas to a panel of professionals, with the chance to secure funding to bring their business plans to life. This process not only sparks creativity but also equips students with practical skills and experience to pursue entrepreneurial ventures in the real world.

Several local businesses and organizations have generously donated seed money to the Pitch Night award fund over the past few months. Thank you to:

Fenton Faces Recipients Celebrated at Breakfast

Our "Fenton Faces" program acknowledges dedicated students for their outstanding aptitude, participation, or specific contributions to a class.
Each department is asked to select a couple of students per semester for its Fenton Face(s). The teacher nominating the student for this honor is asked to write a few sentences about the student and why they were selected.
Students selected in the second semester were honored during a breakfast before school on Tuesday. Partway through the breakfast, Principal Ward called up each student and he read the nomination from their teacher before awarding each student with a certificate.

English 4 Students Present Research Projects

English 4 students displayed their cumulative projects during an exhibition in all lunch periods on Tuesday in Fenton's Student Commons.

Students delved into a driving personal question and presented their research and newfound knowledge on the topics.

The project involved research, writing an essay, creating a presentation, presenting in front of their class, and then being available in the Tuesday school showcase.

Teachers encouraged students to have their project lead to positive contribution to their community, such as encouraging other students to join a cause, take better care of themselves, or raise awareness about a lesser known topic.

Fenton Students Meet their Elmhurst University Mentors

A new Elmhurst University-Fenton High School Mentorship Program concluded its successful first year. Throughout the year, 12 aspiring, first-generation Fenton High School juniors were paired with current first-generation Elmhurst U students and they met via Zoom periodically. On April 22, Fenton students met their mentors in person for a tour of the university campus and later to work together to create "blackout poetry," which involves taking a page of text and blacking out or erasing parts to reveal a unique poem.
