Update from Interim Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

I hope you are enjoying your extended weekend. Please spend meaningful time with your friends and family. We are all fueled and recharged by our loved ones.

This week we had various state mandated testing and we know how tedious those can be. I want to thank our students for giving their best efforts.

The SAT is an important test for juniors who would like to continue their education beyond Fenton and into a college, university, or trade school. The PSAT 9 and PSAT 10 helps our freshmen and sophomores prepare for the SAT, but those tests are also valuable data points for us to know how our students are progressing.

Juniors complete their state testing on their Chromebooks

I also want to thank all our parents, guardians, and close family members for supporting our Bison during testing week.

On Wednesday we had 92% of our juniors in attendance for the SAT and 91% of our sophomores in attendance for the PSAT 10. Then on Thursday we had 94.5% of juniors in attendance for the Illinois Science Assessment and 92% of our freshmen in attendance for the PSAT 9.

Assistant Principal Julia Bray and her team also deserve a shout out for all their preparations and testing day supports.

Another staff member who deserves recognition is Mrs. Lauren Lemm, a longtime Bison faculty member. Mrs. Lemm was recently named Career & Technical Education Instructor of the Year by the DuPage Area Occupational Education System (DAOES) and College of DuPage.

DAOES is an Illinois Education for Employment (EFE) system responsible for planning for the delivery of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in this geographical area. Fenton operates its CTE classes under the guidance of DAOES.

Mrs. Lemm is a dynamic teacher who is always finding ways to make learning more fun and more easily digestible for a variety of learners.

Fenton Teacher Lauren Lemm works with two students on their codes for a custom built and programmed robot.

These last few years, Mrs. Lemm has also been our internship coordinator. Along with Mrs. Papanicolaou, the duo has done a remarkable job of fostering positive relationships with local businesses and organizations. Mrs. Lemm does an exemplary job of preparing our students for their time in “the real world” and helping them to reflect and grow from their experiences.

Actively seeking and cultivating these connections, she has successfully expanded opportunities for students, ensuring a diverse array of internship mentors from various sectors.

Students and teachers set up booths to promote elective classes that can be chosen during course selection.

Thank you Mrs. Lemm, and congratulations!

Finally, I want to encourage everyone to attend our spring show “SpongeBob The Musical” and support our amazing theater students.

Fenton Feeds its Neighbors

Nearly 30 Fenton students joined Mr. Kambic, Dr. Koranda, Mr. Ehrhardt, Mrs. Bohnen, and Ms. Vasilikos to pack food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and distribute to neighbors in need during a mobile food pantry on Thursday, April 18.

This special event was organized in partnership with the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry and allowed students to learn valuable lessons about teamwork and community service.

In total, 193 families covering about 835 individuals received enough food for a couple of days worth of meals. That little bit can make a big difference to families navigating work shortages or suffering large unexpected expenses.

Thank you to our student volunteers for generously donating your time and compassion.

FCCLA Competitor Goes to State

Congratulations to Izabel Krajecki for qualifying for last weekend’s FCCLA state finals, competing in the "Children's Literature" event.

Family Careers & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national organization where students have the opportunity to explore career opportunities and build real world skills by developing projects, engaging and participating in events, and competing regionally and nationally for scholarships and awards. The work of FCCLA helps students and teachers focus on a variety of youth concerns and career pathways such as education, hospitality, human services, and design.

Competitors in the Children’s Literature event create a lesson plan and then present their book and activity as though they were in front of elementary students.

Alejandro Diaz Signs to Play Basketball in College

Fenton senior Alejandro Diaz recently decided to continue his basketball career at North Central College, located in nearby Naperville, Illinois. He chose North Central because of its highly rated academic programming. He plans to study actuarial science, which is a profession that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, pension, finance, investment and other industries.

Alejandro is Fenton High School’s new All-Time Leading Scorer with 1,258 points – the previous record was set in 2020. He also is Fenton’s record holder for career steals (263), career blocks (90), and career assists (336).

This year was especially historic, as the Bison set a new program record for team wins, with a final record of 28-5. Alejandro led the Bison Ballers to the first Upstate Eight Conference Championship by any Fenton team since joining in 2019.

Alejandro was named the 2024 Upstate Eight Player of the Year. He was also named to the 2024 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 3rd Team All State, which means he’s among the top 50 high school basketball players in Illinois.
