Update from Superintendent Ongtengco

Dear Fenton Families,

We have important and exciting news in three areas I wish to cover:

  • SAT, PSAT, and state testing April 12th and 13th
  • State Champion Contest Drama Crew
  • Fenton’s inaugural Multilingual Summit

SAT, PSAT, State Testing April 12th and 13th
The SAT is an important test that can open a lot of doors for our students who want to continue their education after Fenton, and doing well could lead to others realizing their options. The PSAT is a great tool for preparing freshmen and sophomores for the actual SAT, which they will take in their junior year. All of these tests also provide Fenton with good data for planning our curriculum goals.

Fenton has a special schedule for April 12th and April 13th, as seen below:

Wednesday, April 12, 2023
Seniors: Only students taking the Seal of Biliteracy
Juniors: SAT
Sophomores: PSAT 10
Freshmen: No attendance required

Thursday, April 13, 2023
Seniors: Only students taking the Seal of Biliteracy
Juniors: Illinois Science Assessment
Sophomores: No attendance required
Freshmen: PSAT 9

Students who are eligible for testing accommodations, will receive additional information from Rich Watts, Director of Special Education.

Buses will operate their normal morning schedules for students who are required to attend school. Testing begins at 8 a.m. Return busing is readily available after the exams. All students should be home by 1:30 p.m. at the latest. Students do not need to be called out for attendance unless they are missing their testing date due to illness.

I want to give a HUGE BISON SHOUT OUT to the crew and directors of the Contest Drama show "Sylvia." The Bison Contest Drama crew took 1st place in small set design at the IHSA State Finals! Another huge Shout Out goes to the staff directors who lead our incredible students. Congratulations and thank you to Dr. Mike Mitchell, Amanda Baker, and Jeremiah Barr.

Multilingual Summit
I’m excited to highlight Fenton’s first Multilingual Summit, which took place on Thursday, April 6 at the Deer Grove Leisure Center. Fenton's English Language Learners connected with students from York, Addison Trail, and Willowbrook high schools who have the same experiences. The summit included guest speaker Marilyn Rodriguez from LatinX Talk Therapy, as well as breakout sessions that cover college planning, financial aid, employment advice, and relationship building, among other topics. A huge thank you to the Bensenville Park District for hosting this important event.

This is another life-changing opportunity for our students and another example of Fenton being a leader among DuPage County schools. Thank you to all our partners, the Bensenville Park District, and the wonderful students from our neighboring communities.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send an email to fentonhelp@fenton100.org

Let's Go Bison!

-- James Ongtengco, Superintendent

April 3 through 7 was National Assistant Principals Week. We celebrated and showed our gratitude for two of the best any school could ask for. Thanks for all your dedication and passion, Mrs. Bray and Dr. Koranda!

Real Life Environmental Science

Students in AP Environmental Science classes with Ms. Stephanie Downen and Mr. Jeff Baeder visited Lenkaitis Holsteins Farm on Thursday, April 6 to witness and apply many of the concepts they are learning in class about agriculture and sustainability.

Lenkaitis Holsteins, located in west suburban St. Charles, is home to a state-of-the-art dairy barn and 60 Registered Holstein and Red & White Cows.

FCCLA Students Qualify for State

Family Careers & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national organization where students have the opportunity to explore career opportunities and build real world skills by developing projects, engaging and participating in events, and competing regionally and nationally for scholarships and awards. The work of FCCLA helps students and teachers focus on a variety of youth concerns and career pathways such as education, hospitality, human services, and design.

Fenton students competed regionally at College of DuPage and three qualified for the State Finals, being held April 14 in downstate Springfield. Senior Esther Zachariah (individually) and juniors Sofia Diaz and Izabel Krajecki (team taught lesson) earned silver medals in the "Children's Literature" event at College of DuPage and are heading to state.

Competitors create a lesson plan and then present their book and activity as though they were in front of elementary students. All performers receive a medal if their score falls within a certain point total.

Fenton congratulates Esther, Sofia, and Izabel!

Spring Musical 'Little Shop of Horrors' runs April 20, 21, 22

Fenton’s Spring Musical 'Little Shop of Horrors' is gearing up! The cast is in final rehearsals and the stage crew is adding the finishing touches.

Little Shop of Horrors is a classic play about a nerdy florist who seeks romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant that has a constant need to be fed. It's a fun high-energy show that never takes itself too seriously and provides our students with great opportunities to show off their acting, singing and dancing skills.

Fenton Families and the general public are invited to our 7 p.m. shows on
▪️ Thursday, April 20
▪️ Friday, April 21
▪️ Saturday, April 22

We also have a free senior citizen luncheon at noon, followed by a matinee show at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. To reserve seats for the senior citizen matinee, call our hotline at 630-860-8620. The deadline to reserve is 12 pm noon on Wednesday, April 12.

Save the Date: Fenton Cinco de Mayo Kermes

Fenton’s newest fundraiser returns on Saturday, May 6. Mark your calendar for a day of food, music, face painting, and games.

This annual event was spearheaded by School Board Member Leo Figueroa, who will spend several nights helping prepare the many different dishes available for purchase. The menu typically includes Tacos, Gorditas, Tamales, Sopes, Tortas, Enchiladas, Fried Tilapia, Fresca, and more!

A soccer tournament and 5K race typically kicks off the Kermes at 10 am and a band closes out the Kermes in the evening. More details will be posted our homepage fenton100.org as the date gets closer.

This is a family-friendly event is co-sponsored by the Bensenville Park District and open to the public. Remember, all proceeds benefit Fenton students!

Catching A Break from the Wind

Fenton softball and tennis teams got a break from the wind AND some added bling over Spring Break. Thank you to our Buildings and Grounds team for acquiring the new school-spirit themed windbreakers for our fences. The Bison Fastpitch Team was so excited they installed the windbreakers on their dugouts themselves. Let’s Go Bison!

Drop it and Drive

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and School Resource Officer Patrick Fajardo is encouraging all students, staff, Fenton Families, and visitors to keep their eyes on the road while driving.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes on our roads today. Using a phone in any form other than handsfree mode is not only dangerous, but in Illinois it’s illegal. Drop it and drive.
