Update from Superintendent Bentsen

Dear Fenton School Community,

We are very proud to have so much support from our community and regional partners in a variety of ways these last few weeks. Our students are the innovators and leaders of the future, and we are thankful for all of the support we have received in this shared journey.

College Exploration Week

College Exploration Week is next week, March 16 through 20. Similar to our exciting Career Week in late February, this series of events includes opportunities for students to explore potential paths toward their goals, and even meet people who can help them get started. Students should not miss out on these fun events that can help plan their future:
  • Monday (All Lunches): College Fair in the ARC! Much like the Career Fair, we will have the ARC loaded with college representatives (our entire first row speaks Spanish!) who can describe their programs and answer any questions our students might have. All attendees will receive a small prize.

  • Tuesday through Friday (during Bison Time): Join Ms. Georgakis and others in the Community Room for a Scholarship Workshop, College Kahoot, A Decision game, and a Virtual Alumni Panel.

  • Tuesday through Friday (during lunch periods): Bring your lunch to the Community Room for College Tour Viewing Parties and FREE POPCORN! Viewing parties are a great way to get a first visual for a school of interest without having to leave home. It’s a great icebreaker!
Students should click here to sign up and secure their spot for these Bison Time events!

Thank you to all the college representatives and alumni who have agreed to attend either in person or virtually. Plus, a big thank you to Ms. Georgakis for all her time and energy in coordinating these important events.

Music in our Schools Month

March is Music in our Schools Month and we got it started with a fantastic Band Concert on Thursday, March 5 and then our always popular Spaghetti with a Song Fundraiser on Sunday, March 8.

I’m always inspired by how many people in our community either contribute prizes to our Spaghetti with a Song Fundraiser fundraiser or attend the event to enjoy music and quietly compete aggressively to win the prizes.

Thank you to Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone and his staff for welcoming Ms. Barr (Fenton Music Boosters President) and Mr. Kambic (Fenton’s Director of Community Relations) to the March 6 Senior Citizen Luncheon to share information about the fundraiser and raffle off free tickets.

All the proceeds benefit our music programs and students who are continuing their music endeavors after Fenton.

And of course, hats off to these amazing student musicians! Spaghetti with a Song is a unique show because the students get to pick their favorite songs to perform, which adds another layer of fun and excitement.

Then Mr. George and his team hosted the Tri District Band Festival on Tuesday, March 10 with special guest Low Down Brass Band performing an insightful workshop. Thank you to our good friends at the Bensenville Arts Council for sponsoring this guest appearance.

Young Women’s Leadership Summit

An outstanding group of community leaders joined us on March 6th for the Young Women’s Leadership Summit – in honor of International Woman’s Day. This was yet another opportunity for our students to be inspired and empowered through authentic experiences. Each of these panelists generously donated their time to share wide-ranging experiences and advice for our students as they take the next steps in making their marks on the world.

Thank you to our panelists:

Interpreting Dreams

Students in in AP English 3 with Ms. Norris and Ms. Millman are creating symbolic dream catchers inspired by the themes of The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. Each part of the dream catcher represents ideas from the novels, such as hope, the pursuit of dreams, obstacles, and the realities that shape people’s lives.
Students will reflect on how characters in both stories chase their visions of a better future, often facing barriers that change or challenge those dreams. Through colors, materials, and symbols, they will visually interpret how dreams can inspire, trap, or even fade away.
This project encourages students to connect literature with creativity while exploring how the concept of “the dream” appears across different texts and time periods.

Exploring Potential Career Paths

Thank you to the nearly 50 local businesses and organizations that joined our Career Fair on Thursday, February 26, giving our students a chance to meet industry professionals and ask their own questions.

This great opportunity allowed students to browse tables in the ARC and meet professionals from a variety of fields in a casual and more approachable setting. Students were encouraged ahead of time to think about the careers they’re interested in and then talk to professionals in those areas to gain a better understanding of what to expect.

Students who completed a worksheet of pre-determined questions to ask professionals at the Career Fair were entered into a prize raffle.

Check our social media for more pictures from the Career Fair.

Celebrating Joy, Perseverance, Renewal
