Nearly 50 students are at Fenton from 7 to 10 a.m. participating in the girls volleyball summer camp, with cheers erupting through each door of the Front Gym every few moments.

Head Coach Valerie Andrews and her team of assistant coaches stand in strategic locations to toss volleyballs into unpredictable spots on the court to test their players reflexes and team coordination. Every so often, Coach Andrews switches up the teams so the students can experiencing play with and learning from others in the program.

All three courts are up and running for these drills and scrimmages. Students in rotation range from freshmen to seniors, cheering each other on and laughing off mistakes.

Varsity captains Carolina Herrera Reyes, Aubry Lopez, and Gabriela Jachymiak reflect on a long Tuesday that seemed to fly by so quickly:

"We're here at Fenton over the summer to get stronger and build better connections with our teammates so we can be ready to have a great season. It's a lot of hard work and dedication but what makes it easier is that we always have fun and make new friendships along the way," the captains said.

Fenton's stadium is also busy with activity. The Bison Football team spent weeks preparing to have a joint practice with the Wheeling High School squad on July 15 and the Plainfield Central football team on July 16.

Coach Mark Farrell and his coaches run the students through drills and scrimmages from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. day after day. He encourages them to remember their personal best and then surpass it.

The visits to Wheeling and Plainfield are not full blown competitions, and they don't count in the standings. But they're still new challenges to explore, with unfamiliar routes to defend and new skills to experiment with.
