Dear Parent/Guardian of Incoming Fenton Freshman,

It is an exciting time at Fenton as we prepare to welcome the next class! Incoming freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9 at Fenton High School. This is a mandatory exam for all students entering Fenton. We need consistent and current information on knowledge, skills, and abilities, in order to place each student in classes for a successful first year in high school. The results from this exam are used to assist with classroom placement and will help determine if students require summer school instruction prior to entering Fenton High School.

This year we will have the exam on: PSAT 8/9 Exam Make-up PSAT 8/9 Exam Saturday, October 5, 2019 TBD

The exam begins at 8:00am and will conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m. (Students will not be dismissed until testing is completed.) Students should arrive at 7:45am and enter at the auditorium entrance (Door 3).

Room assignments will be provided the week prior to the testing and will also be posted at Fenton on the day of testing. Students should come prepared with a calculator and #2 pencils. A. When does the PSAT 8/9 take place?

On Saturday, October 5, 2019. The PSAT 8/9 will be administered from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on both Saturdays. The doors will open at 7:45 a.m.

B. Where does my child go for the placement test?

On Saturday October 5 the PSAT 8/9 will be offered at Fenton High School. Your child should test at Fenton. If you need further assistance, please check http://www.fenton100.org to look at the high school boundaries map.

Students should be picked up and dropped off at the following:

• Enter Door 3 – Fenton Auditorium Entrance. Picked up at Door 1.

C. What should my child bring to the test?

• Two No. 2 pencils with erasers (not mechanical pencils)
• A scientific or graphing calculator. There is a calculator and non-calculator section of the exam, however, all questions can be answered without a calculator.
• A book to read if he/she completes the test early.
• Students must use their official birth name when testing. Please label all of your child’s belongings. No portable electronics should be brought into the testing rooms. Cell phones are allowed but must be turned off during testing.

D. What is the PSAT 8/9?

The PSAT 8/9 will provide information about preparation in Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. It measures college readiness and will provide students with tools to start preparing for their future. PSAT 8/9 will prepare students for the SAT suite of assessments that they will take while in high school. E. Why is it important for my child to attend the test?

We need consistent and current information on your child’s knowledge, skills, and abilities, in order to place your child in classes that will allow him/her to have a successful first year in high school. We would appreciate it if you can emphasize the seriousness of the test. If a student is too disruptive during testing, you will receive a call to pick up your child.

F. Will I receive PSAT 8/9 test results?

Yes, in January or February you will receive information on your child’s performance. These scores are used for placement and are not part of the student’s permanent record.

G. What do I do if my child is currently receiving special education services (has an IEP)?

The majority of special education students should take this placement test. District 100 receives a list of students in the special education program from the middle/junior high schools. If your child needs special accommodations for testing, as required by an IEP, please contact the middle/junior high school to be sure that the correct information was passed along or contact the special education division head at the high school your child will attend.

All final placement decisions will be made at the annual review during their 8th grade year.

H. What do I do if my child has a 504 designation?

District 100 receives a list of 504 students from the middle/junior high schools. If your child needs special accommodations for testing, please contact the middle/junior high school to be sure that the correct information was passed along or contact the Assistant Principal for Student Services at the high school your child will attend.
