Grading Statement
The purpose of grades at Fenton High School is to communicate student progress toward mastery of class learning standards to students, parents, and other stakeholders. Grading practices at Fenton reflect an understanding that students learn at different rates and have different needs. Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their growth and learning and are expected to take steps to correct errors of knowledge, understanding, or skills.

We believe that it is important for parents/guardians to regularly check our grading systems for up-to-date information about grades on coursework as assessments. All student grades can be viewed in PowerSchool.

NE** |
* FE = Failed with Effort - Student submitted sufficient evidence. Student learning did not meet standard.
** NE = No Evidence Provided - Student did not submit work or the work submitted did not provide enough evidence to evaluate learning.
Each department will use common grading practices within the established guidelines:
-
Graded student work is recorded in two categories:
-
The practice category includes formative activities designed to provide students with regular feedback to improve student learning.
-
The performance category includes summative assessments designed to evaluate student learning.
-
-
Each department will determine the weight to be placed on the performance category in the gradebook ranging from 70% to 90%.
-
Final exams will count for no more than 20% of the final grade.
Unexcused Absences
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:
Students marked as unexcused for any class period are ineligible to make up any practice or performance activities for a grade. Grades will be recorded as a permanent NE in the gradebook with no opportunity for remediation. (Students have 48-hours to have an unexcused absence cleared by their parents or guardians.)
EXCUSED ABSENCES:
If a student has an excused absence on the day of a practice event, the student should have the opportunity to make-up that assignment in a timely manner. The student may also be exempt from the practice event.
Missed Performance Assessment Guidelines
If a student has an excused absence on the day of a performance assessment, the teacher may provide up to five school days from the day they return to make up the assessment. If the assessment is not completed within the time frame, it will be entered as an NE without the possibility of makeup or retake/remediation.
Remediation Procedure
At Fenton High School, students must have access to remediation for all major performance events in the form of retakes, test corrections, project or essay revisions, and/or grade replacement.
Guidelines for teachers giving remediation opportunities include but are not limited to
-
(1) Allowing ample time for the remediation to occur.
-
(a) Remediation opportunities must be available for at least two weeks from the date the assessment results are communicated. Remediation should be limited to target deficiencies when appropriate.
-
(b) Initial grade replacements must be issued within four weeks of the assessment date.
-
(i) Teachers must provide alternative assessment opportunities if no assessment opportunities are planned within the four weeks.
-
-
-
(2) Providing direct feedback and opportunity for reflection. Conferencing with the student about the results of the assessment when possible.
-
(3) Providing opportunities for remediation in-class or within the school day.
-
(4) Limiting the requirements as much as possible for the student to access the remediation opportunity
-
(5) When only a singular remediation opportunity is provided, the remediation opportunity cannot lower or harm a student’s grade.
Accessing your Student’s Grades
Grade reports will be mailed home every 9-weeks. However, we strongly encourage all families to check their student’s grades on a regular basis; ideally, once a week.
To check your student’s grades, log into PowerSchool. You will see a summary of your student’s grades at the bottom of the screen.
To see more detailed information on your student’s grade in a specific class, click on the grade in the W1 category.
A summary of all assignments, tests, and projects for that class will be found under “Assignments.” Here, you can monitor if your student is missing any work.
Questions about your student’s grades
If you have any questions about your student’s grades or class performance, please contact their teacher or counselor.
